Start off 2013 with The Gathering Ireland

By The Gathering Ireland, 01 January 2013

The Gathering Ireland officially got underway in the wee hours, but people around the country have been planning their gatherings for months. Already, such events as the Bunclody v Central Coast Sydney Charity Match, Castlecomer Wellie Race and Achill Island New Year’s Day Swim have brought people together. And, of course, that’s just the start of a year of fantastic events, both big-time festivals and small, intimate gatherings. Many are happening this month, including the five highlights below.

Nollaig na mBan

Part of the ‘Reviving Traditions’ series of events organised by Lucan’s community radio, Nollaig na mBan is scheduled for 6 January. This special woman-focused gathering will display testimonies of ladies from Lucan, so the organisers have called on local groups and the disapora to share the stories of the women in their lives, whether it’s a mother, daughter, grandmother or friend. It’s sure to be a great day to get together and pay tribute to all the amazing women in the community, past and present. View details

There’s no denying the strong links between Ireland and Australia throughout history and today. Many Irish people have travelled down under, some staying for a short period and others for a lifetime. On 26 January, Woolshed Baa & Grill in Cork is the place to be for anyone who’s lived in Oz and since returned to Ireland. There will be trips down memory lane, music, chat and even some Aussie beers. View details

Brigid of Faughart Festival

Taking place in Co Louth over five days, this volunteer-led festival celebrates Brigid as a goddess and saint. The festivities get underway on 30 January and include a whole range of activities. There will be lectures and workshops about St Brigid as well as the annual Pilgrimage Walk from Dundalk town to the Faughart Shrine. Other highlights include a night of poetry and music, craft and garden workshops, and more. View details
