About this Gathering

We are inviting past swimmers from all around the world to return to DIngle for the last weekend in April or at any time in 2013 and beyond to join us in celebrating Fungie's residence in DIngle Harbour for 30 years.

 

ITINERARY -

We hope to hold the following events, many of which are weather permitting.

FRIDAY

*7.30pm – Exhibition of Fungi Photographs  - by Jeannine Massett and Rudi – in the Marina Centre, Dingle Marina. www.facebook.com/12FungieForever12 The exhibition will be open on Saturday and Sunday.

 

*8.30pm – Official Opening by Miriam O’Callaghan– in John Benny’s Bar, Strand St. Dingle. ‘Memories of Fungie in the early days’ with John O’Connor. With music from the talented local duo ‘Lumiere’ and surprise guests!

SATURDAY

*8am – 10am Brosnan’s Morning Swim (by boat) 0669151146 brosnanswetsuithire@yahoo.co.uk 2hr early swim , with 7mm wetsuit and gear available to hire.  In the Tranquility of Dingle Harbour join the excitement and thrill of trying to swim close to Fungie the Dolphin - 066 9151146

*10am onwards. Boat trips out to the dolphin throughout the day with the Dingle Boatmen, from the pier (behind the tourist office) www.dingledolphin.com  0669152626 Join us on a 1 hr short boat  tour to Dingle Harbour to Fungie . This Dolphins friendly antics and apparent love of people are enormous joy to all ages as he plays close by the boat. Breathtaking scenery, an adundance of birds and feeling of oneness with nature. A tour not to miss. Tours every hour from 10am to 6pm. Special offer for Festival  26th-28th  - 1 child free with every paying Adult and 10 % off for couples and groups

Here, in the spectacularly beautiful Atlantic waters of Dingle Bay, we regularly encounter at least five species of cetaceans (whales and dolphins), with porpoises, common dolphins, bottlenose and risso’s dolphins and minke whales the most frequently observed species.

 

*12pm Exhibition of Photos – Upstairs in Lisbeth Mulcahy’s Weaver’s shop, Green St, Dingle.

In memory of the late Tina Frohlich, photographer, film-maker, dolphin lover. This is a show of pictures lovingly put together by Tina’s son Tilly, taken of Fungie over the years. (free)

 

 *12.00pm Screening – The Dolphin’s Gift – Phoenix Cinema, Dykegate Lane, Dingle. (€6-)

Followed by a Q & A Session with past swimmers. Talking about Fungie’s influence on their lives.

*7pm Reading extracts from Heathcote Williams’ epic poem about Fungie - ‘Falling for a Dolphin’ in Currans Bar, Main St. Including a Singing Session with the very accomplished local singer Bernie Phaid Uí Mhuircheartaigh and friends.  www.myspace.com/berniephaid

 

*8.30pm Concert – Eoin Duignan + Muireann + poet Dairena Ni Chinneide. in St James’s Church, Main St, Dingle. www.duigo.com  Eoin Duignan is a high gifted composer and musician, his enchanting melodies are moving and delightful. He has composed a special piece for the concert in honour of the dolphin. www.muireann.ie  Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh is a fantastic musician and a stunning vocalist.

 

*9.30pm ‘Walking on Cars’ + guests playing in An Conair Bar, Spa Road, Dingle. This sensational new Dingle band’s gig is not to be missed. Walking On Cars are creating sounds as beautiful and dramatic as the landscape that envelops them. From the Dingle Peninsula, the five creatives first grew to know each other from a shared interest in surfing. This friendship soon gave way to a tuneful collaboration, borne out of a desire to write music. With songs reflecting both the isolation and consolation of Dingle, this year Walking On Cars look set to add to their increasing number of admirers. www.walkingoncars.com

*12pm Wild in the wild – A documentary film by Tina Frohlich made in 1990, telling the story of Fungie taking up home at the mouth of the harbour. Phoenix Cinema. (With Ronnie Fitzgibbon talking about his memories of the early years)

 

*2pm Maria Simonds-Gooding Exhibition of Prints – Skellig Hotel, Dingle. Maria Simonds-Gooding has been identified as one of Ireland's foremost painters and printmakers to have emerged since the Sixties. Her work, which has been exhibited internationally, is represented in many public and private collections, including those of the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.  www.simonds-gooding.com The exhibition also includes some picture by local children.

The exhibition is to be opened by Dr Horace Dobbs, founder of International Dolphin Watch, UK.

*3pm Talk - Solitary Dolphins around the world with Margaux Dodds of Marine Connection www.marineconnection.org /Dr Horace Dobbs  www.horacedobbs.com Dr. Horace Dobbs is renowned around the world for his amusing, yet thought provoking talks and film shows on his work and experiences with dolphins.
Horace’s enthusiasm and ability to transmit his ideas at all levels so endeared him to big audiences at the National Geographic Society in Washington, that he was awarded a Silver Bowl (the equivalent to an Oscar in the film world) by the International Platform Association for his presentation ‘Follow a Wild Dolphin’ about Donald the dolphin.in Skellig Hotel, Dingle.

 

 *5.30pm  Boat trip to bless the dolphin with Mon. Padraig O’Fhiannachta, Chairman of the Diseart, centre for spirituality and culture. www.diseart.ie This will be a special moment blessing the dolphin out of gratitude for all he offers so freely to people and to celebrate his presence at the mouth of the harbour for the last 30 years.  Boats will leave from the pier and will be organized by the Dingle Boatmen. www.dingledolphin.com  0669152626

*7pm Closing BBQ and Music in Sullivan’s Courthouse Bar, The Mall, Dingle. www.osullivanscourthousepub.com One of the newest bars in Dingle, yet steeped in tradition and with some of the best traditional music in the area.

 

*8pm ‘Sarah Miles and me and the deep blue sea’– One man show – reading by actor Don Wycherly, directed by the writer Mick Mulcahy Playwright/Actor/Director. There will be music around the town in many bars at night over the weekend.
