The Old Day Old Ways Festival, incorporating Heritage Week 2013, is a month-long festival of the traditions and heritage of County Longford. Many organisations have come together to develop a programme of events which promote and celebrate aspects of our shared past which are still relevant to our collective future.
Events include reunions, old-time classroom re-enactments, music events, exhibitions, readings, genealogical events, boating trips, nature walks and days filled with fun and merriment for all the family. We warmly invite you to join us in Longford throughout the month of August and discover a whole new way of looking at the past.
In honour of the Year of the Gathering, the theme for this year's festival is 'Everyone has a story - let's explore yours'.
As such overseas visitors are invited to discover Longford's rich history and heritage through a variety of workshops, exhibitions, walks and talks throughout the county.
'Old Days Old Ways' incorporates many of the other events and heritage-related festivals such as 'The Patsy Farrell Traditional Music Festival', 'Mowing Pat Murphy's Meadow', 'The Old Forge Killoe Festival' and 'Ballymahon Heritage Day'.
This month will also incorporate National Heritage Week which takes place from August 19th to 24th.
This week will feature a range of events for young and old to stimulate interest in our shared past. These events include an exhibition on Longford writers, including the Padraic Colum Appreciation Day, and talks on the North Longford Flying Colum. Longford's involvement in World War I will also be featured, alongside activities for children.
